The Tragic Body of Alexandrine

Alongside Marie-Ève Pelletier, professor of classical tragedy at the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Montréal, and Jamie Wright, a contemporary dancer, the participants will be confronted with performing tragedy and the demands of alexandrine. Too often dissociated or hierarchical, the technical demands of alexandrine and the body’s expressiveness will be treated together, in order to offer performers the opportunity to hone their entire instrument. A class that combines the rigour of technique, the instinct of the body, and the tragic impulse.
Prerequisites
Excellent knowledge of French
Specific requirement(s) for the course
Each participant is invited to bring an extract from a classical tragedy in alexandrine, by Corneille or Racine. The length of the extract is to be agreed upon with the facilitator.

Marie-Ève Pelletier

Marie-Eve Pelletier trained in acting at the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Montréal (1999). Since her graduation, she has performed in numerous productions under the direction of Martin Faucher, Denise Filiatrault, Lorraine Pintal, Simon Boudreault, Marie-Josée Bastien, Robert Bellefeuille, Téo Spychalsky, Claude Poissant, Charles Dauphinais, Luce Pelletier, Florent Siaud, Maxime Carbonneau…

She also collaborates with the Théâtre de l’Œil as a puppeteer and created the show Voix de poitrine, a theatrical singing tour, with her trio Le Brassières shop. In the movies, she worked with Bernard Émond in Le Journal d’un vieil homme and on the small screen, she appeared in the series Toute la vie, Fugueuse, Catastrophe and 5ieme rang.

Holder of a diploma in diction and phonetics (2010), she began teaching these subjects as well as voice at the CADQ, and since 2011, she has been teaching French diction (CMM) and reading (CADM) in Montreal, as well as continuing education at the Union des artistes. Since 2020, she has been teaching classical tragic acting to the second year cohort of the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Montréal.

Her approach to the tragic text favours, in particular, a resolute bodily presence of the performer aiming to anchor the structure of her score to the concrete energy of thought. Her first collaboration with Jamie Wright dates back to 2020.
