Lifting workshop with Heidi and Nathan

How to give my weight, or receive the weight of the other? How to create a context of body listening, in order to unite my body to the other’s. Two artists from Branché (Acting for Climate Montreal) will present the foundations of group lift work: from counterweight to columns to aerial techniques and catching. Each human is an ecosystem, we learn to work with what each person brings to the group. Through respect, listening, valuing others and paying close attention, we can reach new horizons together.

Heidi Blais et Nathan Biggs-Penton

– Heidi Blais – Born in California and based in Montreal, Heidi Blais is a self-taught circus artist. She practices and teaches hand balancing, hand to hand, acroyoga, slackline and hair hanging. A graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in architecture, Heidi views movement arts through the lens of her design background. As much focused on play as an interest in biomechanics, her pedagogical approach aims to unlock new bodily and creative pathways with her students. In 2018 and 2019, Heidi traversed the world record highlines, measuring 1.9 and 2.0 km long respectively, in Asbestos, Quebec. She has been teaching with AcroYoga Montreal since 2012 and performing in-situ circus with Branché since 2020.

– Nathan Biggs-Penton – Nathan grew up in the woods in a house built and designed by his parents. Climbing to the top of the highest trees, flying down the hills following the deer, and sliding across the frozen ponds gave him the feeling that anything is possible. Questioning the limits and where this anything could bring him.

In 2013 Nathan dove head first into the world of physical expression; dance, manipulation, acrobatics, clowning and more. Circus Smirkus, The Stockholm University of Dance and Circus, and the Quebec Circus School were his starting blocks to push off into a never ending journey to expand the capabilities of his mind and body; a shaky, heart wrenching, ever changing journey made possible by the steadfast trust in the circus family around the world. The house his parents built inspired him to build his own. This house is not fixed to the ground but rather grounded by the love and trust of the community, allowing Nathan to jump into the world open-hearted and ready to explore.
